Clay Space students and Open Studio members who enrol can make their pieces at Clay Space and on the raku date have their pieces fired at Thomas’ new studio. \nThe class is suitable for intermediate and advanced student. \nRaku workshops will take place on – \nSun\, Jan 18\, 3pm-8pm\nSun\, Feb 1st\, 3pm-8pm\nSun\, Feb 22nd\, 3pm-8pm \nRegistration: Members \nRegistration: External-own Studio \nRegistration: External – Don’t have own studio \n \n  \nAbout the artist \nTrained in Berlin at Best Sabel School of Design\, Thomas earned his diploma in photography and photodesign in 2003. In 2004 he moved to Toronto where he continued his work in visual art. His awards and recognitions include the selection of his image “Tattoo” as the featured image for the European Month of Photography 2010\, a Design Exchange Award for Best In Show in 2011\, and recognition from the Design Exchange for his work as the lead photographer of Poor But Sexy magazine from 2009-2012. Thomas’ work in photography has been shown at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and is held in private collections in North America and Europe. \nAdditionally\, Thomas’ sculptural practice involves the ancient technique of Raku and forms derived from organic shapes. He is interested in the layering of textural components\, through the use of slips and other media\, to add tactility to his works. His pieces play with weightiness and form and often involve large vessels with small openings for the odd branch. DESCRIPTION:Wheel Throwing Workshop with Cathleen Nicolson\n  \nJoin us at Clay Space on Saturday\, January 31st\, from 5–8 PM for a special wheel-throwing workshop with Cathleen Nicolson. We’ll explore both historical and contemporary approaches to altered wheel work\, followed by a live demonstration that begins with a classic symmetrical form and shows multiple ways to transform it. Her beginning as a teaching assistant developed into a teaching position in the art fundamentals program and eventually throughout the full time ceramic program\, landing on an intermediate throwing and atmospheric firing class.\nThe wheel-centric composition process has always been the primary research focus for Cathleen.

SUMMARY:What a Way to Dye
DESCRIPTION:Indigo dyeing is one of the oldest traditions of fabric decoration\, and the world’s only source of natural blue dye.  We are thrilled that one of our long time students\, Julie Sinden\, will be holding an intro to indigo dyeing workshop at the studio.  Julie is an award winning textile artist with years of experience working with both natural and synthetic dyes.   \nIn the 3 hour class\, participants will have the choice of dyeing three tea towels or three pieces of fabric. We will explore two surface design techniques\, shibori and clay resist.  In between steps Julie will be talking more broadly about natural dyeing\, fabric decoration and the many different directions one can take.

SUMMARY:Candle and Candle Holder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who like to make it all from scratch we are making our own candles and candle holders. This Workshop is going to be led by two amazing artists; Wax artist Aidan Fitzgeard and our very own Ailia Rizvi. With Aidan\, participants will make a pair of dipped taper beeswax candles. These may be sculpted into more sculptural/experimental shades. Ailia will be demonstrating and leading students through different hand building techniques to make the holders.

SUMMARY:Make an impression - Introductory Mold Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If there is one thing which will strike fear and panic into a studio technician’s heart\, it is the mention of plaster and mold making!  And for that reason we have decided to offer an introductory mold making workshop 🙂 \nThe number of things which can go (and will go wrong) are many\, so we’re keeping this one simple.  Participants will be making a simple\, 1 part mold by making the original out of clay\, building a plywood and clay coddle\, mixing the plaster and pouring.  Once the mold is cast it will then be cleaned up.  Our very own Ailia Rizvi will be leading this workshop.

SUMMARY:Clay Space Studio x Textile Museum of Canada - Beginner Pottery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Textile Museum of Canada is facing an extended closure and we’re partnering with them for a fundraiser workshop. Clay Space is offering a beginner pottery workshop where participants will get to use a pottery wheel as well as some hand building time to create their own ceramic. Using a variety of textiles to imprint shapes\, lines\, and textures\, participants will bridge the fields of ceramic and textile\, resulting in a work of art that will be exhibited at the Textile Museum of Canada upon their reopening.\n\nAdmission is $70+HST with additional donations welcomed to help TMC reach their fundraising goal. The Workshop will take place on Aug 9th\, from 6pm-8pm. We thank you for your support!
